MAGELLANIC OYSTERCATCHER Haematopus leucopodus

Falkland Islands resident breeder; Falklands 'Black and White Curlew' or 'Pied oystercatcher', black above and white underparts. Length: 43-46 cm (17-18 inches) with long orange-red bill, an orange-yellow iris and bright yellow eye ring. Pink legs and feet. Common around all coasts on low shorelines of sand, shingle, and rocks feeding on marine worms, limpets, mussels and small crustaceans. It will also dig for food in grass paddocks near shores.

Common resident in the Magellanic regions of South America, Tierra del Fuego and southern islands of the Beagle Channel and Staten through to the Falklands. Found on Chilean South America to around 42°S and 43°S on the Argentine coast.
